Because who wouldn’t want one of these during the hot, summer days!?

I found myself quickly needing something to tote my YETI around this summer after fracturing my knee in 2 places (well, technically my leg, but where it meets the knee. OUCH).

I already have my hands full as a busy Momma & needed something that made my water bottle accessible while being on crutches.

Enter this beginner-friendly crochet water bottle sling.

It didn’t take long to whip up – just a few hours. Honestly it took a lot longer than it should have because I was meticulously writing down the pattern so that I could share it here. YAY!

So here it is.

A simple, beginner-friendly project using 100% mercerized cotton for extra strength since regular cotton yarn can be too stretchy.

You could also try making this with acrylic yarn, but the thought of lugging that around during the hot summer months sounds too sweaty IMO. But also, yay for natural fibers!

What size water bottle will this work with?

I made this specifically for my 36oz YETI tumbler (which I absolutely LOVE by the way). The bottle is roughly 3.8″ in diameter & 11.5″ tall (counting the lid).

There is a little wiggle room so that it doesn’t fit like a sausage casing, so it’s not perfectly snug & will fit many water bottle types.

If your water bottle happens to be smaller or larger than this, you can either reduce or add base rounds of single crochets. As long as you have an even number of stitches, this pattern will convert beautifully.

What you need to know before making this crochet sling

Even though this is a beginner-friendly pattern, you will need to know a few basic skills in order to create your own.

This project is mainly consisted of single crochets, double crochets, slip stitches, and chains. You will need to be familiar with working in the back loop only for one round (this helps to keep a tight edge when transitioning from the base to the side of the sling).

Other than that, super simple!

Water Bottle Crochet Pattern:

Make a magic circle. 8sc inside magic circle, sl st into first sc to join. Pull tight to close.

Round 1: ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, sl st into first sc to join (16).

Round 2: ch 1, sc in 1st st, 2 sc in next*, repeat* across. sl st into first sc to join (24)

Round 3: ch 1, sc in first 2 st, 2sc in next*, repeat* across. sl st into first sc to join (32)

Round 4: ch 1, sc in first 3 st, 2 sc in next*, repeat* across. sl st into first sc to join (40)

Round 5: ch 1, sc in 1st 4 st, 2 sc in next*, repeat* across. sl st into first sc to join (50)

Round 6: ch 1, sc in first 5 st, 2sc in next*, repeat* across. sl st in first sc to join (56)

Round 7: ch 2, dc in blo across (56)

Round 8: ch 2, dc across (56)

Round 9: ch 2, dc, ch 1, skip a st, dc in next 2 st.  *ch 1, skip a st, dc in next 2 st.*

Repeat* across, you should end the round with a ch 1 to join into the 1st st of that round

Round 10 & 11: ch 2, dc across (56)

Repeat rows 9-11 four times or until you reach your desired length. sl st in 1st dc in round.

DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

For the strap:

ch 1, then sc 8 across, turn.

continue working sc in a row until you reach your desired strap length, or about 30-32″

keep in mind: the strap will slightly stretch over time, so making it shorter than you’d normally like is ideal.

To join, fold in half and join stitches on the opposite side of sling either by doing all slip stitches or sewing. You will have 20 stitches in between each strap to make it even across.

Fasten off.

That’s it!
